Spellbound in Lucerne: Embracing the Enchantment of Switzerland's Gem

I’ll never forget the smell of fresh alpine, mountain air hitting my nostrils as I got off the train from Venice to Lucerne, arriving in the latter city at night.

While it’s dark, and I cannot see any mountains, or anything outside the immediate city lights, I know they must be nearby because of how damn good and fresh that mountain air is.

I then walk to my hostel, register, and go to sleep for the night.

The next morning, when the sun is fully out, I wake up to the view of the Swiss Alps just outside my window - it’s magical.

So, wondering where to backpack on your next adventure?

I’ve got just the answer for you - and yes, this is my third article on Lucerne because it truly is one of the most beautiful cities you could visit in Europe.

Switzerland in general is a stunning country.

So get ready to experience three more practical, actionable, and budget-friendly tips on visiting Lucerne, Switzerland on a budget and having the time of your life without emptying your wallet.

1. Tracks of Time: Riding Through Lucerne's History on the City Train

Curious to do some sightseeing in a vehicle while visiting Lucerne?

Thankfully, one of the main attractions is a tourist, sight-seeing train that you can take for CHF 15 (CHF is Swiss Francs / currency, by the way).

This is a fast, easy, convenient, and speedy way to see most of the city’s main attractions whilst taking in the crisp, alpine air and warm wind that I mentioned earlier.

Over the course of just 45 minutes, the train will stop by key locations and many of the iconic landmarks.

While it’s not all-encompassing, and whilst you’ll definitely want to explore the city on foot - it’s not big, so it’s definitely doable and you’ll get some excellent exercise -, this is a speedy and thrilling way to get an overview of Lucerne and many of its iconic landmarks.

It’s also a fabulous opportunity to take photos of the mountains, lake, and Old Town - AKA Aldstadt -, and your ticket includes an audio guide!

Tickets can be purchased directly from the driver / conductor, who will pick you up and drop you off after the tour at Franziskanerplatz Luzern.

Once you do that, you might want to check out…

2. Brushes with Greatness: The Artistic Odyssey of Lucerne's Rosengart Collection

This is more for art enthusiasts; if you’re into Picasso, Paul Klee, and other notable modern artists, then this is a great place to view some of their original works.

Named after Seigfried Rosengart, a German-Swiss art dealer from Munich, this museum houses the largest Klee collection outside those of the painters’ family, and was founded by Rosengart’s daughter in 1992.

In addition to showcasing a substantial collection of Picasso’s works, it also features works by other 19th and 20th-century artists.

Tickets are CHF 17 for adults; you can also use a Swiss Museums Pass and Raffeisen Card to get MAJOR discounts on tickets - though those are probably more for those of you planning to stay in Switzerland long term.

3. Above the Clouds: A Scenic Sojourn to Lucerne's Dietschiberg Summit

And finally, about an eight minute car ride from Lucerne, you can trek up Dietschiberg, a mountain on the North Eastern edge of the city with an attitude of 684 meters above sea level, offering stunning views of Lucerne and its surroundings.

This activity is free and provides an excellent way to experience the natural beauty of the region.

It also offers spectacular views of Lucerne, the lake, and the surrounding mountains.

There are tons of forested paths and meadows for you to encounter on your hike up the mountain, all of which are well-marked and suitable for various fitness levels. They’re also super tranquil; give you an opportunity to pop on those headphones and listen to some music while you trek up the alp!

There are also several spots along the way where you can stop, relax, and enjoy a packed lunch with a view.

Be sure to check local hiking maps and guides for detailed information on trail routes and difficulty levels. Also, wear comfortable hiking shoes, carry water, and be prepared for changing weather conditions.

That’s all, folks!
