More and more backpackers are flocking to Lucerne, Switzerland.
This is because it’s one of the most gorgeous places to visit on the planet, with incredible alpine views, a stunning lake, and a gorgeous old-town - AKA Altstadt.
You may have read our first blog post about Lucerne, and the budget friendly travel activities you can partake in while you’re there. And we haven’t covered them all - not even close.
So without further ado, here are three more incredibly life-altering, backpacking experiences you can have in Lucerne, Switzerland, while staying within your budget.
TABLE OF CONTENTS:
1. Lucerne's Frozen Past: From Glacial Grooves to Heroic Lions
One of the coolest things you’ll get a chance to do in Lucerne is to check out the Glacier Garden and its accompanying Lion Monument. These two sites, located conveniently close to each other, provide a glimpse into the city's geological and cultural heritage.
Usually, the experience begins at Glacier Garden, which is a natural monument that dates all the way back to the Ice Age - even though it was only discovered in 1872.
This site is home to stunning glacial potholes formed during the Ice Age - well the last ice age - which was around 20,000 years ago. As you walk through the garden, you’ll see these deep, smooth depressions in the rock, created by the grinding force of retreating glaciers.
The Glacier Garden also features a museum where you can learn about the region’s geological history and the evolution of its landscape. The exhibits include fossils, relief maps, and displays that illustrate how glaciers shaped the Swiss Alps.
Also, don’t miss the mirror maze, which is almost like a funhouse hall of mirrors.
Meanwhile, The Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal) - which is just a short walk from the Glacier Garden - is one of Lucerne’s most poignant and visited landmarks.
Carved directly into a sandstone rock face, this sculpture commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred during the French Revolution in 1792.
The lion, depicted mortally wounded and lying in a peaceful grotto, represents the bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers. The scale, detailed craftsmanship, and the emotional depth of the monument and what it represents to the Swiss make it a must-see for visitors to Lucerne.
Mark Twain famously described the monument as "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world."
The Glacier Garden and the Lion Monument offer a unique blend of natural history and human emotion. They stand as testaments to the powerful forces – both geological and historical – that have shaped Lucerne.
Visiting these sites not only enriches your understanding of the city; also provides a deeper appreciation of the enduring legacies of nature and heroism.
Some Practical Tips for Visiting

3. Melodies in the Mountains: Enjoy Free Music Under the Swiss Sky

I’ll never forget walking back to my hostel at around 6:00 p.m. one, sunny evening during my visit to Lucerne in late May / early June of 2019.
I was dealing with a bit of a cold, so I wanted to get some dinner from a grocery store - I think I got sushi - and just chill for a little bit.
On my way back to the hostel, however, I ran into a family standing outside the Lucerne Cultural & Congress Centre - basically the Lucerne concert hall - trying to find someone to go to the opera with as they had a free / extra ticket available.
The father asked me, “Do you like opera?” I nodded. He showed me the ticket and said I could have it for free.
How on earth was I ever going to say, “No”, to that - even if I was feeling a bit under the weather?
I nodded and took him up on it. It wound up being one of the best, and most memorable experiences I had on my travels.
Even though the opera took place indoors, it was free - as I think they were members of the center -, and Lucerne offers a large and incredible tapestry of cultural experiences, some of which are gratis; others of which are just plain old fun and affordable.
Among these are some of the city’s free outdoor concerts and events that stand out to provide a unique blend of natural beauty and musical enjoyment. This guide will delve into how to make the most of Lucerne’s vibrant music scene without spending a dime.
Discovering Lucerne’s Outdoor Music Scene Lucerne boasts a lively music scene that takes full advantage of its picturesque settings. Sunset Music Sessions:
What to Expect: These are informal gatherings where local musicians perform as the sun sets over Lake Lucerne, creating a really chill ambiance.
Where to Go: Look for performances along the lakefront, especially near Seebad Luzern, a popular lakeside swimming and lounging area.
Highlights: Bring a blanket and some snacks, and enjoy the mix of acoustic sets, jazz, and folk music while watching the sun dip behind the mountains.
Concerts in the Parks:
What to Expect: During the warmer months, Lucerne’s parks become venues for free concerts featuring a variety of genres, from classical orchestras to contemporary bands.
Where to Go: Ufschötti Park and Inseli Park are popular spots for these events. They offer ample space for lounging and enjoying music in a relaxed, family-friendly environment.

Making the Most of Free Music Events To fully enjoy Lucerne’s free music offerings, a bit of planning and local knowledge can enhance your experience:
Check Local Listings: Websites like Lucerne's official tourism page, local event calendars, and community boards are excellent resources for up-to-date information on free concerts and events.

Pack a Picnic: Enhance your experience by bringing along some local snacks or a full picnic. Many locals do the same, creating a festive, communal atmosphere.
Dress Comfortably: Outdoor events can mean sitting on grass or park benches for extended periods. Dress in layers to stay comfortable as temperatures can drop in the evening.
Why These Events Are a Must-Visit
